2000 Interview (Edele)

You might not have seen much of B*Witched lately, but that doesn't mean they've not been busy. There's been some gigs, a trip to Brunei, a top fashion glamour event and some recording for their third album. Here's Edele with the low-down...

So, how's life?

Edele: Life's grand, thanks. To be honest, I've not been doing much at all. I've just been spending some time with my family and friends, hanging out, going round to my friends' houses for dinner, things like that. I'm really lazy.

What did you do after the US tour finished?

Edele: We finished touring America and then we had two weeks off. Keavy, Sinead and me went on holiday together to Portugal. We needed some time off because we were wrecks and it was gorgeous. Lindsay moved into her new apartment.

But there've been a few gigs since America, haven't there?

Edele: Yeah, we've just got back from doing a concert for the Prince of Brunei - though the public was allowed in too. It was a full house and everyone was going mad. We were there with Joey McIntyre and Cleopatra. It was brilliant. The Prince owns a fairground and after the show he took us there and the rides were open just for us, like. He's a really nice guy.

What else did you do?

Edele: We were literally there for just two days, so we went shopping and went to see the Water Village, which is the largest village on water over there. And we actually went to dinner in the palace with the Prince. He's just a normal guy, really, really nice guy.

How did the University gigs go down?

Edele: They were really good fun, actually. Initially, we didn't know what to expect: we didn't know whether we were going there for people to laugh at while they were drunk or whether they did want us there to have a good time. But that's the reaction we got. We had all these smart comments up our sleeves just in case, but we didn't have to use them.

Any stand-out moments?

Edele: Buffalo G (link to site) played a couple of them with us and everyone really liked them too. Actually, at the first gig we did, we had a streaker on stage. He ran across the stage naked and I think everyone expected us to go "Oh my God!" and flip out, but we were like, "Yeah! Well done!"

Is it strange to be out of the spotlight?

Edele: We've never had this much time off ever, so it's weird, very weird, but it's kind of nice. I still watch shows like CD:UK and I always want to be on them. It feels like we've been gone ages and I guess we've been gone since last March, but you go out in the street and people still recognise you.

Has anyone picked up any strange hobbies like golf or basket-weaving?

Edele: (laughs) No, nothing like that. Everybody doesn't know what to do with themselves a little bit. But it's nice. There's tons of girl bands out at the minute which are flooding the market and nobody seems to be doing particularly well, so we're really happy to take some time out and come back next year.

Have you seen Lindsay's new flat yet?

Edele: Yeah, it's lovely and in a really nice little area in London. It's quite big and they've made it look quite modern. She's been decorating it herself.

What's Sinead been up to?

Edele: Sinead's actually got an agent in Ireland, so she's been doing a couple of things over here. She hosts fashion shows and she's been doing some TV shows in Ireland. Which she really likes doing on her time off. She's busy. She's also just finishing her apartment which she got over a year ago. I guess you're always adding bits on when you have a house.

Any showbiz parties or anything?

Edele: We were invited to the Versace fashion show in Italy. There weren't many people there and everybody was really nice. Donatella Versace, George Clooney, Natalie Imbruglia and all the models were there, but nobody was acting like a star. They took us out to a really low-key dinner in this beautiful Japanese restaurant afterwards. We'd never been to a fashion show like that before. It was brilliant.

So, a third album?

Edele: Yeah, but there's not actually much to say. At the moment, we're not sure which way the third album is going to go stylewise. We're just testing out a couple of things at the minute. We will be working with Ray ("Madman" Hedges) again, but we're also working with a guy called Richard Stannard who's previously worked with Kylie, 5ive, Spice Girls, Texas and U2. He's done everybody.

Is it strange to be working with somebody different?

Edele: Yeah, it was definitely weird at first and we were a little nervous. But as soon as we met Richard we clicked with him and he's really nice guy, so it's just natural.

Can you give us any idea of what it's going to be like yet?

Edele: To be honest, it's going to be a lot more mature because we're a lot more mature. I think that's going to be obvious - especially lyrically. But the third album's going to be very different from what we've done: we want to change our style.

How does it work?

Edele: We all write all the time. But it works in different ways, sometimes we write together or alone or sometimes we go into the studio and start writing from scratch.

Were you disappointed with the way "Jump Down" performed in the charts?

Edele: Yeah, of course we were. It's nothing to be happy about really. But I guess it's good to have a dip and then come back up with the third album. And we're ready to come back.

What do you make of all the girl bands around at the moment?

Edele: I think Atomic Kitten are good, but other than that, there's not anybody I particularly like.

There's been all sorts of rumours about you since you've been in America, haven't there? Edele: Oh yeah. While we were away, I think it was in one of the papers that we'd been dropped by our record company. Obviously, we haven't been dropped otherwise we wouldn't be chatting now. If we'd been dropped, we would've been the first to hear it.

Does it hurt to hear things like that?

Edele: I don't really care. You learn to deal with the rumours whatever they are. Initially, when you first join a band and you hear stupid things, it annoys you but then you learn how to deal with it. Whatever they say. The other rumour that's going round is that we're taking so much time out that one of us must be pregnant! (laughs) They're saying: "It's a perfect amount of time, if you think about it. They've been gone like nine months and they'll be gone for another three!"

Well?

Edele: I'd like to confirm that nobody is pregnant. That's just ridiculous, you know what I mean.
